The various perspectives of the field of personality provide the organizing framework: each perspective is presented in two chapters and is introduced by a prologue that describes the assumptions and themes of the perspective.
Engaging and very successful, this new edition introduces hundreds of new citations; presents the ideas logically and orderly and concludes with a unique Integration chapter that brings the various perspectives together.
- A special box called “The theorist and the theory” discusses the role that the personal lives of the theorists may have had on the development of theories.
- The final chapter (18) ties together ideas from different theories presented earlier in the book and also introduces the concept of blending various theories.
- “Problems and Prospects” have been added to each chapter to provide more focused coverage of the theoretical ideas.
- Continuing advances on trait structure and its implications for behavior (mostly within the framework of the five-factor model). This means considerable change in Chapter 4, “Types, Trait, and Interactionism.” Material on the five-factor model is also added to several other chapters.
- Incredibly rapid advances in behavioral genetics, molecular genetics, temperament, neurotransmitters, and other biological processes and how they relate to personality have been integrated into Chapters 6 and 7.
- Adult attachment patterns and their implications for personality and social behavior remain hot topics and have been incorporated into Chapter 11, “Psychosocial Theories.”
- Rapid expansion has also occurred in work on models relating to self-actualization (self-determination theory, terror management theory) and this has been included in Chapter 14.
- Includes new material and a reorganization in both chapters of the Cognitive Self-Regulation perspective, including a discussion of connectionist models, more on contextual models of behavior, and a discussion of process by which intentions are implemented.
- 400 new citations have been included in this edition.
Each chapter concludes with a summary.
I. AN INTRODUCTION.
II. THE DISPOSITIONAL PERSPECTIVE.
III.THE BIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE.
IV. THE PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE.
V. The Neoanalytic Perspective.
VI. THE LEARNING PERSPECTIVE.
VII. THE PHENOMENOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE.
VIII. THE COGNITIVE SELF-REGULATION PERSPECTIVE.

The various perspectives of the field of personality provide the organizing framework for this text. Each perspective is presented in two chapters and is introduced by a prologue that describes the assumptions and themes of the perspective.
As the book’s title implies, there are many perspectives a person might take on personality, many ways to think about human nature. This book describes a range of viewpoints that are used by personality psychologists today. Each perspective on personality is presented in a pair of chapters, introduced by a prologue. The prologue provides an overview of that perspective’s orienting assumptions and core themes. By starting with these orienting assumptions, you’ll be placed right inside the thought processes of the theorists, as you go on to read the chapters themselves. Each chapter concludes with a discussion of current problems within that theoretical viewpoint and the authors’ analysis about its future prospects. Written in an informal, conversation style, Carver and Scheier draw students into the ideas and give them examples of how these ideas can apply to their own life. The result is a book that is engaging and enjoyable as well as informative.
