Teaching Secondary and Middle School Mathematics combines up-to-date technology and research with a vibrant writing style to help teachers grasp curriculum, teaching, and assessment issues as they relate to secondary and middle school mathematics.
Designed for pre-service or in-service teachers, the second edition presents concise, current, and meaningful descriptions of what it takes to be an effective teacher of mathematics. This extensively revised, practical resource offers a balance of theory and practice, including a wealth of examples and descriptions of classroom situations to assist students in visualizing mathematics instruction in the classroom.
Each chapter contains specific outcomes for the reader, a glossary of relevant terms, several discussion questions and an extensive bibliography that contains references and suggested readings. Appendices include a descriptive list of recommended Internet Web sites on mathematics education and two case studies for further discussion.
- Discussion of the use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics is woven throughout the text.
- Contains practical, classroom-tested teaching ideas, sample lessons, and activity plans.
- Provides an overview of current learning theories and a discussion of how research is conducted in mathematics education.
- Discusses in detail assessment in mathematics education from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint (Section IV).
- Case studies allow students to place themselves in the role of a classroom teacher and reflect on how they would handle a given situation.
- “Recommended Resources” at the end of each of the 10 chapters and in Appendix E list hundreds of articles, books, videos, CD-ROMs, and websites—organized by topic—that will provide the reader with ideas of additional resources available on various topics.
- Discussion Questions corresponding with major outcomes listed at the beginning of each chapter assist the instructor in developing lesson plans reflective of each chapter of the book.
- A new chapter examines the four content areas—algebra, geometry, data analysis and probability, and discrete mathematics incorporating specific teaching methodology and NCTM Standards (Ch. 7).
- A new chapter devoted to the topic of equity discusses special needs students, gender equity, and ethnic/cultural differences, and general principles to follow when attempting to meet all student needs in the classroom (Ch. 10).
- “How Would You React?” exercises have been added in each chapter and allow students (and professors) to explore various teaching and learning scenarios and solutions in a debate setting.
- “Spotlight on Technology” and examples highlighting major chapter concepts involving the use of technology have been interspersed throughout and encourage students to think about technology as a whole, not just at one point.
This tentative table of contents is for early review purposes; the final contents may not include all of the selections listed here. Most chapters include “Conclusion,” “Glossary,” “Discussion Questions and Activities,” and “Bibliographic References and Additional Resources.”
