What is an IDEA 2004 Update Edition? The Vaugh/Bos/Schumm text has been updated to reflect this long-anticipated legislation in two ways:
- Relevant discussion throughout the book has been revised to reflect IDEA ‘04. These revisions have been made while still preserving the original pagination of the text, so no changes to lecture notes or reading assignments are necessary, and all supplementary materials (and page references therein) remain accurate. An “IDEA 2004” icon appears in the margins adjacent to the updates.
- A Guide to IDEA 2004 has been included as an appendix in the Update Edition. This clear, comprehensive, jargon-free appendix gives a brief side-by-side comparison of IDEA ’04 versus the previous ’97 legislation for each of the statutes, and, when a little friendly “background” would help the reader better understand the practical implications of the law, an additional note is provided.
Based on the belief that even small accommodations make a difference in the success of students with disabilities, this text provides teachers with the knowledge, tools, and practical strategies that will empower them to spark learning in every student.
From students with disabilities, culturally diverse students, and students with limited English proficiency to economically disadvantaged students Vaughn/Bos/Schumm provide teachers with the tools they need in their diverse classrooms. Revised to reflect recent changes in the law and current terminology, the strength of the book continues to be its numerous learning activities and sample lessons addressing both elementary and secondary classrooms, as well as its four chapter unit on curriculum adaptations with specific strategies and activities for teaching reading, writing, mathematics, and content areas. The strong emphasis on professional planning and collaboration make it an excellent resource for all teachers.
- “Making a Difference: The 60-Second Lesson” features throughout all chapters present brief mini-lessons that provide specific, concrete examples of how a teacher can make a difference for students with disabilities or diverse needs in only one minute of time.
- Each chapter section includes “Tips for Teachers” with specific advice, guidelines for teaching practice, and step-by-step procedures.
- In each of the last four “content area” chapters, “Making a Difference Through Action Teaching” features present sample lessons that include objectives, procedures, and application suggestions for classroom implementation.
- “Tech Talk” features in every chapter describe a technological application that can be used in the classroom to enhance success for all learners, particularly students with special needs.
- “Research Brief” features in every chapter highlight brief summaries of essential research studies that relate to key points in the chapter.
- Chapter sequence has been reorganized, shifting those on general teaching (which had been Chapters 2-4 in previous edition) to now follow all of the categorical chapters.
- Discussion of Autism has been increased significantly and relocated to Chapter 3, “Teaching Students with Communication Disorders and with Pervasive Developmental Disorders.”
- Information on the March '99 regulations to IDEA '97 has been added to Chapter 1.
- Chapter 2 (formerly Chapter 5), “Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders,” reflects increased coverage of ADHD. This chapter has also been given a more metacognitive emphasis.
- Chapter 7 (formerly Chapter 2), “Planning and Grouping Strategies for Special Learners,” reflects an increased emphasis on grouping (e.g. ability grouping for reading).
- Chapter 8 (formerly Chapter 3), “Managing Student Behavior,” has been revised with an increased emphasis on school-wide behavior management and positive behavioral support, focusing more on "problem kids."
- Chapter 9 (formerly Chapter 4), “Collaborating and Coordinating with Other Professionals and Family Members,” has increased coverage of co-teaching.
Every chapter includes “Chapter Outline,” “Focus Questions,” “Introduction,” “Summary,” “Key Terms and Concepts,” “Tips for Teachers,” “Research Brief,” “Tech Talk,” “Making a Difference: The 60-Second Lesson,” “Think and Apply,” and “Read More About It.”

Based on the belief that even small accommodations make a difference in the success of students with disabilities, this text provides classroom teachers with the knowledge, tools, and practical strategies that will empower them to spark learning in every student.
From students with disabilities, culturally diverse students and students with limited English proficiency to economically disadvantaged students Vaughn/Bos/Schumm provides teachers with the tools they need in their diverse classrooms. Revised to reflect recent changes in the law and current terminology, the strength of the book continues to be its numerous learning activities and sample lessons addressing both elementary and secondary classrooms. This edition continues its very popular multi- chapter unit on curriculum adaptations with specific strategies and activities for teaching reading, writing, mathematics, content areas, and study skills, which has been further strengthened by a new capstone chapter on teaching self-advocacy, study skills and strategies. The strong emphasis on professional planning and collaboration make it an excellent resource for all teachers.
