This collection of European Romantic poetry features sixty poets in seven languages in recent or new verse translations, from Ossian to Baudelaire, Heine, and Lermontov.
Now readers can survey the richness of the Romantic movement in poetry in one volume. This new anthology gathers seminal works, such as Schiller's “Gods of Greece,” Hugo's odes and “oriental” poems, Foscolo's “On Sepulchres,” and Mickiewicz's sonnets alongside lesser known works, many of which have never been translated, or not in a century or more. It also includes the works of ten women poets in German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian.
- All translations are in verse and the original epigraphs are preserved and translated for the most accurate representations of the works.
- Full annotations explain literary allusions, cultural references, and idioms.
- Headnotes introduce each poet and selected poems to provide historical and cultural context.
- Organized by country (or language) and poet's date of birth, the text's arrangement allows for maximum instructor flexibility. An alternate table of contents arranged by theme or form provides for another approach to literature.
- Selected poems are accompanied by original text so students may consider what is preserved and what is lost in translation.
