Early Warning, Timely Response: A Guide to Safe Schools was developed at the President's request by the Departments of Justice and Education, in cooperation with the National Association of School Psychologists. It tells what to look for and what to do to prevent violence, how to intervene and get help for troubled children, and how to respond when violent situations occur. This report, Indicators of School Crime and Safety, 1988, is the first in a series of annual reports on school crime and safety from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the National Center for Education Statistics. It presents the latest available data on school crime and student safety. The report provides a profile of school crime and safety in the United States and describes the characteristics of the victims of these crimes. It is organized as a series of indicators, with each indicator presenting data on different aspects of school crime and safety. There are five sections to the report: Nonfatal Student Victimization‹Student Reports; Violence and Crime at School; Nonfatal Teacher Victimization at School‹Teacher Reports; and School Environment. Each section contains a set of indicators that, taken as a whole, describe a distinct aspect of school crime and safety.

This site is an excellent resource for violence prevention from the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) and the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). This site identifies ten violence prevention programs which meet high standards in program effectiveness. They include: Midwestern Prevention, Big Brothers‹Big Sisters, Functional Family Therapy, Multisystemic Therapy, Nursing Home Visitation, Treatment Foster Care, Quantum Opportunities, Life Skills Training, Paths, and Bullying Prevention.
