The triangular model of love
Robert Sternberg [(1988) suggests a somewhat more complex formula for love. He envisions it as a triangle, based on the three "corners" of passion, intimacy, and commitment. He argues that these three components contribute (in varying combinations) to most long-term relationships.
]
- Passion refers to the emotional infatuation and desire that can be experienced by people in love. It contributes to the romantic feelings of being "in love."
- Intimacy involves deeply personal communication and the sharing of feelings. It contributes to feelings of closeness and connectedness with the other person.
- Commitment refers to the intention or conscious decision to be with the other person. It implies that to some extent the individual decides to enter into or stay in the relationship, and plans to work at making the relationship a success.
