The Preface sets forth the general assumptions underlying the book. It argues that the book is intended as a challenge to more traditional Foundations of Education textbooks. Its purpose is to direct its readers to many of the most interesting and vital issues in the field and in our culture in general. A postmodern perspective is emphasized in which change and complexity are seen as constants in the teaching profession and American culture. The idea of teacher as “border crosser” is emphasized, along with the idea that schools must be understood in the context of the larger communities in which they are located.
