What is a Gang?

A gang is a group of three or more people with a territory ("turf"), outward displays of membership (such as clothing), a language of sorts ("graffiti" and gestures), leaders, and various goals. The goals may be to protect their "territory" (usually a neighborhood in the city) from invasion by members of rival gangs or to sell drugs. Only about 25% of gangs are selling drugs as a group. But all gangs use violence to protect territory, to keep gang members in line, or to get revenge on rival gang members. The usual method of punishment and revenge is murder with handguns.
