Your Answers and The Actual Research

Pennsylvania State University social psychologist Janet Swim and graduate student Lauri Hyers asked female students taking introductory psychology how they would respond to each of the sexist remarks. Compare your response to the test group:

Question 1: Study participants who said they would ignore the comments

Five percent of the female students predicted that they would ignore each of the comments or sit back and see what others would do.

Question 2: Study participants who said they would comment on the inappropriateness of the remarks

Definitely yes, agreed 48 percent of Swim and Hyers' female students.

But there is a problem. Take a look at what Swim and Hyers actually found when they conducted this experiment with other female introductory psychology students.

56% (not 5%) said nothing in response to the sexist remarks (which were made by a male "confederate" working for the researchers). And a mere 15 % (not 48%) commented on their inappropriateness.
