Joan Lippens
Washtenaw Community College, Michigan
Joan Lippens is a full-time faculty member and Department Chair for the Academic Skills Department of Washtenaw Community College (WCC) in Ann Arbor, MI. She is the lead instructor for College Study Skills and Speed Reading and well as a MyReadingLab Faculty Advocate. In addition to her own teaching and course development, revolving departmental chair and committee assignments at WCC, Joan has written external curriculum. She has written experimental reading programs for Ann Arbor remedial high school students and reading comprehension courses for adult ESL students.

Laurie Lorence
San Diego Mesa College, California
Graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a BA in English, then later obtained her M.Ed from the University of Washington with a specialty in reading. She taught developmental reading classes at Shoreline Community College in Seattle, Washington for seven years, then relocated to San Diego where she has worked at San Diego Mesa College for ten years as a developmental reading educator and teacher education program manager. She is an active member of the advisory board for San Diego public school’s volunteer reading program. She also teaches online where her English class was nominated for the 2007 online teaching award from California’s virtual campus.

Bernadine Skowronski
Union College, Kentucky
Bernadine Skowronski teaches Transitional Reading at Union College in southeastern Kentucky. She entered the field of development education as an adjunct at a community college in Ohio in 2002 and found that she really enjoyed teaching developmental reading and basic writing. She has a M.Ed. in Literacy from the University of Cincinnati and a MA in Spanish from Middlebury College. In the past, she has been a volunteer tutor of adult new readers and a trainer of new tutors and is currently striving to find the time to become involved in this area again. She served in the Peace Corps, in the Republic of Palau, for three years as a Reading Skills Education Specialist in a small elementary school (grades 1-8), with a primary focus on training teachers and promoting reading throughout the community. In her free time, some of the things she enjoys are walking, reading, counted cross stitch, and sight-seeing.
